Practical Completion and Handover: The Final Stage of Building Your Home

Learn what happens during Practical Completion and handover when building a home in NSW, including walk-through inspections, final payment, warranties, and receiving the keys.

After months of planning, approvals and construction, your home is nearly ready.

The final stage of the building journey is Practical Completion (PC) followed by handover.

This is when your new home is completed, inspected, and prepared for you to move in.

Here’s what happens during this final phase.

What Is Practical Completion?

Practical Completion (PC) is the stage where construction work is substantially complete and the home is ready for occupancy.

At this point:

  • All major building works are complete, except for minor defects or omissions
  • Inspections have been carried out
  • The home meets compliance requirements
  • The property is move in ready

Before PC is officially confirmed, you will attend a PC walk-through with your Site Manager.

The Pre-Handover Walk-Through

Prior to Practical Completion, you’ll walk through the home with your Site Manager.

This important step allows you to:

  • Check fixtures and finishes
  • Identify any minor touch-ups or adjustments
  • Confirm works are completed as per contract

Any identified items are documented and scheduled for completion before final handover.

This ensures your home is delivered to the agreed standard before you move in.

Final Payment Before Handover

Once Practical Completion is confirmed, the final payment is required as outlined in your contract.

This payment is made before keys are released.

Your lender (if applicable) will need time to release the final payment – we will provide you with an invoice for payment and the bank will start their processes to release the funds. This can take some time, so make sure you speak to the bank before you book your removalist truck!

After payment is received and documentation is finalised, your home is ready for handover.

Handover Day: Receiving the Keys

Handover is one of the most exciting milestones in the entire journey.

During the handover appointment, you will:

  • Receive the keys to your new home
  • Complete final documentation
  • Be provided with important warranties and manuals
  • Receive information about your home’s features and systems

Your Site Manager will walk you through:

  • How appliances and systems operate
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Warranty details
  • Aftercare support process

This ensures you feel confident and informed about your new home.

Warranties and Ongoing Support

Your home comes with structural and product warranties in accordance with NSW building regulations.

At handover, you’ll receive details outlining:

  • Structural warranty coverage – Perry Homes provides a 20-year structural guarantee
  • Manufacturer warranties for fixtures and fittings
  • Maintenance & landscaping guidelines
  • How to report any post-handover concerns

Moving Into Your New Home

Once handover is complete, your building journey officially comes to an end and your new lifestyle begins.

From the initial deposit through to Practical Completion, each stage has been carefully managed to ensure:

  • Compliance with NSW regulations
  • Quality workmanship
  • Clear communication
  • Transparency throughout the process

Now it’s time to enjoy your new home!
